Whether you are planning on studying abroad or pursuing professional registration, the IELTS exam is a key part of your application. It measures your language proficiency and communication skills. If you score a band 7 or above, you will likely be welcomed by most schools and employers. The IELTS exam is divided into four sections: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Each section has a different set of questions. Each question is worth one mark. The total test time is two hours and 45 min
Speaking and writing are more difficult to assess than reading. The IELTS test-takers speaking and writing scores are rounded up to the nearest band. Depending on the IELTS test-takers level, their band score will vary by up to 0.5 bands. Speaking and writing are more difficult to assess than reading. The IELTS test-takers speaking and writing scores are rounded up to the nearest band. Depending on the IELTS test-takers level, their band score will vary by up to 0.5 bands.
A high band score in the writing portion of the IELTS test is not based on fancy vocabulary. It is based on how well you logically support your ideas. You will also need to use a variety of grammar tenses and linking devices.
The speaking portion of the IELTS test is a face-to-face interview. The examiner will ask you to describe a situation, discuss a topic, o?r explain a process. Each section has its time limit.
The overall band score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The sections scores are weighted equally.
Some examples:
Test | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average of four components | Band score |
(total of the four individual | ||||||
component scores | ||||||
divided by four) | ||||||
Test taker A | 6.5 | 6.5 | 5 | 7 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
Test taker B | 4 | 3.5 | 4 | 4 | 3.875 | 4 |
Test Taker C | 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6 | 6.125 | 6 |
If the average of the four sections ends in .25, the overall band score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the overall band score is rounded up to the next whole band.
Section band scores
Listening
The IELTS Listening test contains 40 questions. Each correct answer is awarded one mark. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale. Scores are reported in whole and half bands.
Reading
The IELTS Reading test contains 40 questions. Each correct answer is awarded one mark. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale. Scores are reported in whole and half bands.

However, Academic Reading tests may contain texts which feature more difficult vocabulary or greater complexity of style.
